Baccalieu Coastal Drive

The Baccalieu Trail Region of Newfoundland and Labrador consists of approximately 70 communities stretched out along 240 km (150 miles) of coastline on a peninsula that forms the north side of Conception Bay and the south side of Trinity Bay on Newfoundland’s Avalon Peninsula.

It is a region with a long and rich history and heritage. Some of the oldest European settlements in North America were established here including Cupids, established in 1610; the Bristol’s Hope Plantation established at Harbour Grace by 1618; and Carbonear settled by at least 1631.

Archaeological research conducted in the region over the past ten years is also revealing a rich history of aboriginal occupation extending back over 4000 years.

Skirwink / Saddle Trail

This Trail is approximately 5 km in length and starts just north of the Harbour Authority building where there is a designated parking area. There is also a parking area at the far end of the trail in Cook’s Cove.  The trail is a fairly easy walking trail that takes in some magnificent views of the coastline between Old Pelican and Cook’s Cove.

The name “Skirwink” is a local pronunciation of a point of land locally known as Skirwink Point which was referenced on Cook’s map of the 1700s as Sherwink Point. “Saddle” is derived from a physical feature of a narrow section at Skirwink Point resembling the shape of a saddle.

Jack's Path

Jack’s Path is approximately 1 km. An easy hiking trail that connects Skirwink-Saddle Hiking Trail to Monument Trail.

Development started in 2023 after Jack Howell and his mom, Crystal, hiked over 120 km in the Trinity-Conception -Placentia Health Foundations hiking challenge. They travelled throughout the Avalon region hiking various trails selected for this challenge.

At the end of the challenge, Jack was identified as being the winner of $10,000. These funds had to be invested in a trail development or upgrade. Hence Jack’s Path was developed as part of the Skirwink-Saddle Hiking Trail and the Monument Trail.

Monument Trail

Monument Trail is an ongoing upgrade Trail, offering approximately a 2 km somewhat challenging climb. It can be accessed by Skirwink -Saddle Hiking Trail via Jack’s path or by taking the entrance across from the beach in Cook’s Cove.

Monument Trail got its name from the monument at the top lookout of this Trail. The monument has mystified people for years. Three friends took on the challenge of erecting this Monument without modern-day equipment . Some people refer to it as Old Perlican’s stonehenge. It’s certainly worth the hike, offering excellent photo opportunities and spectacular views.
