The ambulance service in Old Perlican stands as a critical lifeline for the residents of the Bay de Verde Peninsula. As of 2026, the service has undergone a significant transformation, moving from a town-operated model to an integrated part of the provincial health network – operated by NL Health. The service located in Old Perlican has two ambulances – fully staffed- on call 24/7.
The most critical change for residents is the method of contact. Historically, many residents called the Dr. A.A. Wilkinson Memorial Health Centre directly to request an ambulance. However, the local seven-digit numbers and hospital lines no longer provide access to emergency dispatch.
In any medical emergency, you must dial 911. Calling 911 connects you immediately to a trained Medical Communications Officer who can provide life-saving instructions—such as CPR guidance or allergy response—while the ambulance is en route.
The ambulance service in Old Perlican has undergone significant transformations recently as part of the provincial transition to a unified public system. This service provides a critical link in the emergency medical infrastructure of the Trinity Bay North region. Managed by NL Health Services, the service ensures that residents of Old Perlican and surrounding communities have access to rapid pre-hospital care. It is a vital link for the Trinity Bay North area, providing emergency response and patient transport and essential for bridging the gap between local emergencies and the specialized care available at larger regional hubs.
The ambulance base, located in the centre of Old Perlican, is integrated with the Dr. A.A. Wilkinson Memorial Health Centre, located on Main Road in Old Perlican. This facility serves as the primary hub for health services in the region, including emergency care, family practice, and outpatient services. While the health centre provides primary and outpatient care, the ambulance team serves as the mobile extension of this care, often acting as the first point of contact during life-threatening events.
Crucial Update: As of June 1, 2024, residents are directed to call 911 for all emergency ambulance requests. The old local 10-digit emergency numbers have been phased out to streamline dispatch through the Provincial Medical Communication Centre.
Historically operated through a funding agreement with the town and private operators, the Old Perlican ambulance service is now part of the NL Health Services public system. This was a significant move to stabilize rural healthcare. This transition means that the local staff members—typically a team of approximately eight professionals, EMTs, PCPs and potentially ACPs, depending on current recruitment and rotation—are now provincial employees, giving them access to provincial benefits, pensions, better job security and standardized training, ensuring that the quality of care in rural Newfoundland matches that of
urban centers.
Under provincial regulations, ambulance fees are standardized across Newfoundland and Labrador. Residents with a valid MCP card are charged a flat rate of $115.00 for emergency transport. For those without provincial coverage or visitors to the province, the cost is significantly higher, involving a base fee of approximately $240.00 plus a per-kilometer charge. It is important to note that if a patient is being transferred between healthcare facilities for a higher level of care, the cost is typically covered by the provincial health authority.
