The Scenic Town of Old Perlican

Old Perlican is a fishing village on the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland and Labrador. Incorporated in 1971, it is one of Newfoundland's oldest fishing communities, serving as the major fishing station in Trinity Bay for migratory fisherman from England in the 17th century.

The town of Old Perlican is located at the intersection of Routes 70 and 80 - and is approximately 60 km from Carbonear and 50 km from Heart's Content. With a population of 676 people, Old Perlican is a thriving service centre for the collection of smaller communities at the head of Trinity and Conception Bays.

Our Community Vision

Town Council will work to ensure that Old Perlican continues to be a thriving community so that by 2020 the community is the hub of the economy for all communities at the tip of the Bay de Verde Peninsula.

Council wishes to enhance the quality of life of its residents by providing and upgrading municipal infrastructure such as improved water and sewer services, road upgrading, municipal building upgrades, recreation and cultural improvements.

Old Perlican is currently a major service centre with a hospital, high school, seniors' home, funeral home and various other businesses and amenities. We will strive to maintain the existing business base, as well as encourage new business to develop here.

Our Flag Design History

The Town Flag consists of white saltire on blue with the town crest in the middle. The flag was developed by Kent Noonan as part of a public competition in 2005. The flag was adopted as the official flag of Old Perlican in 2006.

Old Perlican Town Crest

The Town of Old Perlican was incorporated on March 30, 1971 and the first council elected July 12, 1971. The Town logo, developed by Alex Beckett, was adopted on May 12, 1982. The saucer shaped Old Perlican Island is the focal point. This island sheltered the harbour and the schooners in earlier times, dating back to the community's origins in the late 1500's. The lighthouse gives perpetual fame to the first lighthouse erected on the island in 1910, as an aid to mariners. The bird in flight symbolizes the "pelican" from which Old Perlican derived its name in the days of Sir Francis Drake. The boat represents our rich fishing heritage, the reason our forefathers settled to gather the wealth of from the sea.
